INP was founded in 1964 and began to work in areas that were very innovative in Portugal at that time: Advertising and Public Relations, Tourism and Executive Assistant & Office Management. Since then it was continued to work in these areas providing the academic background for the institute’s degree courses today.
INP has always been a pioneering School, combining, on the one hand, the teaching of new skills for new professions that could supply Portuguese companies and local and regional governments, and on the other hand, with positive dynamics and, on the other hand, introducing new pedagogic styles to Portuguese Third Level Education. INP has always been playing a major role in fostering the social and economic development of the country and, on the other hand,
In 2000 a new programme of Post-Graduated Studies was offered, helping to lay the ground for developing scientific and technical degree courses for graduates and professionals, namely in Public Relations and Advertising, Tourism and Management areas. The Post-Graduated courses also had the objective of providing means by which graduates from other areas, who are now working in these fields, could acquire technical and professional knowledge in these areas. In this way INP complemented its primary degrees with Post-Graduated courses that by their very nature provide a space for constant innovation especially related to the skills and knowledge that are required by the market in specialised areas.
Today’s society needs to conciliate research and academic knowledge with promotional and marketing techniques. For that reason INP constantly tries to understand the needs of business and local and regional governments. INP has always tried to introduce a strong practical component in its degree courses and to guarantee the balance between theoretical-technical knowledge and practical techniques. Therefore, the acquisition of practical skills is emphasised whilst the transmission of these skills is reinforced by a solid theoretical background.
The combination of the academic, pedagogical and operational perspective has been one of the fulcral reasons leading our graduates to be successfully placed in the work market in Portugal since the 60s. In a rapid changing society the graduates of INP have completed the tasks they were asked to perform in both the private and public sectors successfully.
The premises of INP occupy a built-in area of 8600 m2 large and include four buildings: the Palace of Santa Clara built in the XIX century; a recent building, housing substantial part of the administrative services and classrooms; and two additional buildings, with further classrooms and the Students association and the Tuna Académica (Traditional School Band). The buildings are surrounded by un impressive and beautiful garden
The Institute has one auditorium with a seating capacity of 420, two additional auditoria, each with a seating capacity of 120, a total of 24 classrooms, a library and archive for documents, self-assessment centre for languages, computer laboratories, offices room for the faculty, a bookshop and stationary shop, bar and canteen, the social services office and the getting-together room for students.
